2020 was one of the most difficult years our community has faced. As COVID-19 swept through Melbourne, lockdowns, job losses, and isolation placed enormous strain on vulnerable families — and it was community organisations and their leaders who stepped up to fill the gaps left by an overwhelmed system.

In recognition of this work, Somali Community Inc. President Mr Farah Warsame was awarded a Melbourne Awards 2020 Community Champions Certificate. The City of Melbourne created the Community Champions recognition specifically to honour local leaders whose generosity, resilience, and hands-on leadership helped Melburnians get through the pandemic's hardest months.

Mr Warsame's certificate reflects not just his own dedication, but the tireless work of the entire Somali Community Inc. team — volunteers, staff, and community members — who spent 2020 delivering food relief, hygiene supplies, and wellbeing support to families across Flemington, North Melbourne, Kensington, and surrounding suburbs. It's a reminder that community strength is built by people who show up, again and again, when it matters most.

Congratulations, Farah — this recognition belongs to the whole SCI community. To learn more about our ongoing work, visit our About Us page or follow our latest updates on News & Events
