On behalf of the Somali community in Victoria, Somali Community Inc. Victoria (SCI) wishes to express its profound grief and heartfelt condolences to all those affected by the devastating attack that took place on Bourke Street in Melbourne's CBD in November 2018. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims, their families, and all emergency responders who acted with such courage in the face of tragedy.

An Unequivocal Condemnation

SCI unequivocally and unreservedly condemns the act of violence carried out on that day. There is no justification — religious, political, or otherwise — for such a senseless attack on innocent members of our shared community. Violence of this kind is abhorrent, and we stand firmly against it in every form.

This act of violence does not represent the Somali community, the Muslim faith, or the values we hold dear. We reject any attempt to associate our community or our religion with such conduct.

Our Values, Our Faith

Islam, like all faiths, is founded upon principles of compassion, justice, and the sanctity of human life. The actions of one individual cannot and must not be used to define an entire community or religion. The overwhelming majority of Somali Australians are law-abiding, hardworking members of Victorian society who contribute positively to the fabric of this great city and state every single day.

We acknowledge the pain and fear that events like this can cause, and we understand that communities may feel unsettled. SCI encourages all Victorians to resist the temptation to direct grief or anger toward any particular group. Blame must rest solely with the individual responsible for this act.

A Call for Unity and Calm

SCI calls on all members of our community — Somali, Muslim, and Victorian alike — to remain calm, to stand together, and to trust in one another during this difficult time. Melbourne is a city built on diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. These values must not be undermined by acts designed to sow division.

We stand in full solidarity with all Melburnians. What affects one community affects us all. We are united in our grief, and we will remain united in our resolve to build a peaceful and cohesive Victoria.

SCI also extends its gratitude to Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, and all first responders who acted swiftly to protect lives on that day. We encourage anyone with information relevant to the investigation to cooperate fully with authorities.

The Somali community in Victoria has always been, and will continue to be, a proud and peaceful part of the broader Australian community. In the face of tragedy, we choose solidarity over division, compassion over fear, and unity over discord. We mourn together as Melburnians, and together we will move forward.
